Dani Miller was once concerned with traditional beauty standards. She was once addicted to drugs, She used to be nervous to dress a certain way and hide her teeth with a retainer. She used to care what people thought. SOON she discovered that being herself allowed her to do whatever she wanted, she became happy and comfortable in her own skin. This decision seems to be paying off, not only is she the front women for the punk band Surfbort. SHE is also an ambassador for Gucci and the face of the new Gucci beauty campaign - teeth out there for everyone to see, not a retainer in sight.
WE should all take a page from dani’s book. embrace Your inner freak, fuck the haters and get out there and be you.
How has music changed your life?
Music has brought a lot of great things into my life, I think it’s just because the community is so awesome. It’s such a huge supportive community, full of awesome people who want to dance, laugh and have fun.
Talk about being yourself?
Being yourself is really special and important because it’s the way you can shine the brightest and just feel good all the time, because you don’t have to try that hard. It’s really genuine and makes everyone happy.
Growing up your just trying to figure out what’s going on, there’s so many pressures of socialization and people judging you, but once you figure out that “oh I can be me and I can do whatever I want" its super powerful. It has taken me a while, I used to wear a fake teeth retainer and be really nervous to dress a certain way at work or in front of different people. Once I shut off the layers and put down the walls, I feel way better and I’m super happy.
Do your friends help you to continue to be you?
Yeah, find your people, freaks recognize freaks. Find people that really bring you up in the world and support you. The ones that let you be yourself, enjoy your quirks and understand you even when your mad or happy or whatever. Just find your people that really understand you. Yeah, I try and surround myself with people like that and it’s the best.
How do you stay positive?
I definitely struggle with depression and anxiety, there’s always ups and downs in life. One thing I just learned early on is that, no matter what, maybe it will take a week, maybe it will take a month, maybe it will take 6 months, good shit is going to happen and good things will come your way. So that’s a good way to stay positive and enjoy the time you have on this weird planet.
What is fashion to you?
Fashion to me is being comfortable and I’m comfortable in clown clothes and freaky shit.
Any advice for staying passionate?
The main thing in life is just to do it. If you have wild ideas, go for it.
